Project Overview

John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) is one of the New York metropolitan area’s three primary commercial airports. As the fifth busiest airport in the United States, and the busiest airport in New York City, JFK encompasses roughly 5,000 acres in Jamaica, NY.

The JFK Cogen Pant that resides at the Airport is utilized to provide electricity to the entire Airport, as well as thermal energy for heating and cooling of the Airport Terminal buildings. Thermal energy is directed to the Central Terminal Area Buildings via chilled and medium temperature water produced by the Central Heating and Refrigeration Plant (CHRP).

The Plant consists of 107 MW natural gas fired Cogen Facility (consisting of two combustion turbine generator sets, 2 heat recovery steam generators and a steam turbine generator), a CHRP plant (consisting of varying sizes of steam and absorption chillers, ranging from 1000 TN to 6000 TN, heat exchangers, pumps and generators), a TDS (consisting of roughly 30,000 LF of medium temperature water supply and return piping and a chilled water distribution system), as well as a complex system of electricity and fuel connections.

Envision’s scope of work included cost estimating services to identify costs for the replacement of three cooling towers, replacement of the medium temperature underground piping, like for like replacement of equipment currently used at the JFK Cogeneration Plant, and new building structures to house the equipment.
